ASSODANTAS - Assoc. Agricultores Familiares Corrego D'antas
ASSODANTAS functioned mainly as a community association for its first few years and began meeting more regularly to organize for reduced costs and greater efficiency in sales by 2007. The group raised a large portion of their Fair Trade certification funds by hosting and selling food at a local Italian Folk Festival. The association earned their Fair Trade certification in late 2009 and made their first Fair Trade Certified™ sale in early 2010.
ASSODANTAS is one of fifteen Brazilian Fair Trade Certified producer groups that participated in the 2007-2010 Responsible Sourcing Partnership (RSP) project. The RSP project is a result of a partnership between USAID, TransFair USA, Walmart Stores, Inc. and SEBRAE-MG designed to improve the quality of Brazilian coffee, increase market linkages and raise producer capacity. Through the partnership, ASSODANTAS participated in several trainings including governance, business management, cupping and the best post-harvest practices to improve coffee quality.
Achieving Fair Trade certification has inspired many of our members all over again. Optimism has returned about the quality of life we may achieve as small farmers. Meeting attendance is up and members are motivated to continue improving the quality of their coffee. ”
