Improving Lives for Sugarcane Farmers in Belize
Sam’s Club’s [5] support for Fair Trade is making a positive impact for sugarcane farmers in Belize. These farmers often confron
t uncertainties in the face of changes in food trends, trade policies, and Mother Nature’s ever-changing weather patterns.
In 2007, the 6,000 small-scale farmers of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association saw this uncertainly at its worst when the region was hit by Hurricane Dean, which destroyed much of their crop. Sugar is Belize’s largest export crop, representing 60% of Belize’s agricultural export production, so the impact was devastating to the region. The farmers were forced to replant and rebuild.
The next year, in 2008, the sugarcane farmers found a new opportunity in Fair Trade. The impact has been enormous. Now, three years later, the farmers’ lives have improved and their communities are flourishing. Sam’s Club’s support of this journey means that the future looks even brighter.
