Alright folks, here is another great way to integrate Fair Trade into your life. The availability of Fair Trade Certified wine is growing: Sam’s Club , Target and Whole Foods began offering the first ever Fair Trade wine in the U.S. this past November. And now, Cost Plus World Market has Fair Trade Certified wine too.
Cost Plus is carrying Fairhills ’ Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals, which are produced in South Africa and Argentina. They are imported by the Organic Wine Trade Company . In addition to compliance with basic Fair Trade standards, a special set of Fair Trade guidelines for South Africa have been implemented to support post-apartheid economic empowerment programs. These special programs provide land and business ownership opportunities to previously disadvantaged workers, mandating that workers own shares in at least 25% of the certified business entity.
In addition to ensuring fair labor conditions for workers, certification also prohibits the use of harmful agrochemicals and GMOs in favor of environmentally sustainable farming methods.
