Producer Profiles

Chamong TEE Exports LTD

The group's initial foray into the tea industry began in 1916 when it acquired its first tea garden in Assam, and has since then expanded to four estates in Assam and 12 in Darjeeling. Collectively it produces some of the world's finest teas and enjoys an enviable reputation in the tea world.

Chamong Tee Exports Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated in 1992 as the trading arm of the group. Its primary objective was to market and export directly the produce of the Group's gardens, both in bulk as well as value added form. Operations soon expanded to include trading in all varieties of teas, so that customers could be provided with a varied product mix, and ensure standards were tailor-made to suit their specific requirements.

The total tea production of the Lohia Group today is about 3050 metric ton annually and employs about 10000 personnel of which approximately 7000 are women.

Social security and workers welfare have always been given high priority, together with all the statutory benefits such as free housing, ration, medical and maternity benefits to workers. The gardens have fully equipped hospitals, primary schools, for workers' children and places of worship for each community.

The group's commitment to environmental issues is reflected in the number of gardens that have been or are in the process, of being converted to the Bio-Organic method of cultivation. This policy not only made it possible to offer buyers the best flavor of certified Bio-Organic teas, both from Darjeeling and Assam as per EU Regulations, but more importantly, provided a healthier working and living environment in the gardens and surrounding areas.

Amongst other Eco-friendly projects in our Darjeeling Estates, is the tapping of natural water resources and harnessing this to produce hydroelectric power. Additionally to save deforestation and to maintain an ecological balance, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) is being provided to the workers, thus making wood fires redundant.

A new fully automatic blending and packaging unit has recently been commissioned in Kolkata for hygienically blending and packing teas in keeping with the EU regulations and HACCP standards.

The group has stood the test of time and its integrity, loyalty and service is beyond compare and the track record speaks for itself.

The company's infrastructure and flexibility have given it a competitive edge, and they now export to most of the major tea consuming countries in Europe as well as UK, Japan, USA and the Middle East.
