Sewpur Tea Estate

Teaworkers at the Sewpur Tea Estate cultivate their gardens on the plains of the Dibrugarh district in the northeastern state of Assam.

Quotable

Our workers received liquefied petroleum gas and pressure cookers from Fair Trade revenue. It was a common problem for the garden management to provide firewood for its workers. Hence liquefied petroleum gas will help the workers save time and are also saving the environment so they can live a better life.

The condition of our garden roads has been improved through Fair Trade funds. All workers, school children and local people will benefit and increase communication within the community. I hope Fair Trade implements more development programs in the near future.

Programs

Home Improvements

Workers' homes are being developed within the garden, and additional investments enable the distribution of chulhas and cooking fire stoves, which reduce the consumption of firewood and greatly ease in food preparation. Fair Trade premiums have also been used to distribute mosquito nets to workers.

School Construction

A new school and recreation building was constructed, and scholarships are provided to students.

Women's Programs

The association facilitated the development of an organization for women, focusing on self-help for participants and providing two weaving machines.
