Julio That young boy in the tree is Julio Torres. He lives in a community called El Apante in the mountains of northern Nicaragua. Up until recently, this region was deforested and ecologically decimated because of a US-owned timber company that clear-cut much of the country’s pine forests. Thanks to Fair Trade and to farmers’ hard work, these rolling hills are green again. Julio’s family is one of 80 coffee-farming families in the El Apante Cooperative, Fair Trade Certified since 1992. Coffee trees grow best in the shade – interspersed with multiple species of trees. El Apante’s coffee is now 100% shade-grown. Forest canopy is preserved and migratory songbird habitat is protected. The cooperative is deeply committed to preserving the local environment. Farmers like Julio’s father are using development premiums from Fair Trade sales to pay for critical ecological improvements. Waste-water holding tanks were built to eliminate pollution of local streams and wide expanses of pasture have been reforested to convert cattle lands back into forests. This story is repeated in nearly 60 countries around the world: Fair Trade gives farmers the tools and resources they need to make their crops profitable - and their community and ecosystem sustainable. We invite you to contribute to the Fair Trade movement by making a charitable investment in TransFair USA. Share your commitment wtree-gofith a friend or loved one by sending one of these virtual environmentally themed gifts.
