Fair Trade Certified Products Top the Charts for Quality and Sustainability

For years the Fair Trade Certified™ label has been a symbol for high quality, social responsibility and environmental sustainability, assuring consumers that their goods were evaluated against rigorous standards that support the welfare of the farmers and workers who grow and sew the products we love.

Now Fair Trade standards have received an additional third-party seal of approval from GoodGuide, an online scientific rating system that compares thousands of products on their health, environmental and social performance. GoodGuide has added Fair Trade certification to its criteria for evaluating coffee, tea and cocoa products in an effort to educate consumers about the best ways to use their dollars.

Coffee, Tea and Chocolate

In addition to incorporating Fair Trade certification into the GoodGuide rating system, Fair Trade Certified products also make up the majority of the highest-rated items, consistently dominating the top 10, 20 and even 30 best products in the coffee, tea and chocolate categories.

In the coffee category, the top 23 highest rated coffees are all Fair Trade Certified. With outstanding records in the health, environment and social impact zones, products like Timothy’s Colombian and Nicaraguan blends, Tully’s Fair Trade Organic Evergreen and a wide variety of coffees from Grounds for Change out-score other brands in the race for sustainable must buys.

For tea, 12 out of 15 top products bear the Fair Trade Certified label. With scores of eight and above, Numi Teas really take the cake. Numi’s White Rose Velvet Garden and Breakfast Blend Morning Rise teas are among some of the most environmentally and socially sustainable teas on the market.

Consistently appearing at the top of the chocolate list, brands like Kopali Organics, Green & Black’s, Tcho and Dagoba are the reasons why eight of the 15 best rated cocoa products on GoodGuide are Fair Trade Certified.

Supporting Our Mission

Not only does the GoodGuide model recognize Fair Trade certification as a true standard of quality and sustainability, it also helps support the Fair Trade USA mission of enabling sustainable development and community empowerment by cultivating a more equitable global trade model that benefits all.

While you enjoy your piping hot cup of Fair Trade coffee, farming communities in countries like Ecuador and Costa Rica are enjoying the benefits, including fair wages, overtime pay, access to healthcare, zero-interest home loans, and improved farming equipment. Your Fair Trade banana at breakfast might help send a child to school, and your beautiful Valentine’s Day roses could be the difference between life and death for a flower worker in need of urgent medical care.

“At GoodGuide, we are working to empower consumers with the best information on the most socially and environmentally sustainable products and companies,” said GoodGuide’s Co-Founder and Chief Sustainability Officer Dara O’Rourke. “We want shoppers to know that every purchase matters and that they have the power to make a difference.”
